DE Rantau requirements (Malaysia digital nomad visa): income, job category and contract term
DE Rantau has two income thresholds, not one: USD 24,000 a year for a Digital Professional and USD 60,000 for a Non-Digital Professional. Which threshold applies is decided by the job category you select — and picking the wrong category, not missing the income, is what sends applications back. Your remaining contract term separately changes how long a pass you are granted.
The stated thresholds are simple. What actually returns applications is picking the wrong job category, and a contract term nobody warns you about.

What MDEC requires
Official requirement
- Apply at malaysiadigital.mdec.my and select DE Rantau Digital Nomad (Foreign).
- Every document must be in English. Documents in other languages need translation, and some need notarisation.
- Your passport must be uploaded as all pages merged into a single file, not just the photo page.
- Annual income must meet the threshold for your category.
| Category | Annual income threshold |
|---|---|
| Digital Professional | USD 24,000 |
| Non-Digital Professional | USD 60,000 |

The job category is where applications come back
First-hand record · 2026
The threshold is not the hard part. The category is. It is not chosen by whether you feel like a digital nomad; it follows the job title on your contract and the work you actually do, and MDEC makes the call.
One applicant who applied without an agent in 2026 held the contract title Marketing Manager and applied as a remote worker. She submitted under Technical. MDEC required her to resubmit under Non-technical. That is not a refusal, but the application was returned and rejoined the queue — on a process measured in months, a costly round trip.
Practical test: take the job title exactly as written on your contract, and match it against MDEC's category definitions. Do not start from the threshold you would rather meet and work backwards to a category.
Your contract term changes how long you are granted
First-hand record · 2026
This one is almost never written down: the remaining term on your employment contract affects the approval duration. MDEC raised it explicitly on the second return.
The same applicant's fix was a letter from her employer — stamped, and signed by a principal officer — confirming the contract would be renewed after expiry and setting out the work she would carry. She added it to the file.
Result: the contract ended 2 January 2027; the ePass was issued on 13 August 2026 and runs to 10 August 2027. A full twelve months, more than seven months beyond the contract she held. The letter changed the approval duration.
Common questions
What is the income threshold for DE Rantau?
MDEC sets two thresholds: USD24,000 a year for a Digital Professional and USD60,000 a year for a Non-Digital Professional. Which one applies is decided by your application category, and the category follows the job title on your employment contract and the work you actually do — not the industry you describe yourself as being in.
What happens if I pick the wrong job category?
The application is returned rather than refused. One applicant in 2026 held the contract title Marketing Manager, submitted under Technical, and was told by MDEC to resubmit under Non-technical. That reset her place in the queue, which on a process measured in months is a real cost.
Can I apply if my contract is close to expiry?
Yes, but the remaining contract term affects how long a pass is granted for. One applicant whose contract ended on 2 January 2027 added a company letter, stamped and signed by a principal officer, confirming the contract would be renewed and what work she would carry. Her ePass was issued to 10 August 2027 — a full twelve months.
