Why applications get returned: both rounds, itemised
DE Rantau applications are most often returned for three things: evidence that the work is real, income that is visible at a glance, and proof that your status complies. One applicant applying without an agent in 2026 was returned twice — on 16 March with seven document requests, and again on 30 March. This page itemises both rounds.
Published guides give you a document checklist. This page records what MDEC asked for after that checklist had already been submitted.
The actual document requests received by one applicant who applied without an agent in 2026 · One case; not every application is asked for the same things

First return: 16 March 2026
First-hand record · 2026
Seven document requests in total. The four that are recorded:
- Two marketing plan or campaign case studies, with the matching KPI analysis reports — not a job description, but evidence of actual work output.
- The official email address of the person who signed the contract — for due diligence, to verify the employment relationship exists. A company-domain address, not a personal one.
- A blue-background photograph — the background colour is specified.
- A detailed job description — considerably more than the one line of job title on the contract.
The first two matter most. What MDEC is testing is not whether your role sounds remote-friendly, but whether the job exists and you are the one doing it. Neither item appears on most published checklists.
Second return: 30 March 2026
First-hand record · 2026
- Exit stamp — a New Application requires the applicant to be outside Malaysia before approval, and proof was requested.
- Bank statements with the income lines highlighted, merged into a single PDF — not a set of loose files, and the income has to be visible at a glance.
- Remaining contract term — MDEC noted this affects the approval duration. The fix is on the requirements page: a stamped company letter signed by a principal officer.
What the two rounds have in common
Three things recur: prove the work is real (case studies, KPIs, job description, signatory email), prove the income is real and visible (highlighted, merged statements), and prove your status complies (exit stamp, contract-term letter). You can submit every item on the published checklist and still be returned on one of these three.
Two basics also cause returns: every document must be in English, and the passport must be uploaded as all pages merged into one file.
Common questions
Why do DE Rantau applications get returned?
One applicant was returned twice in 2026. The first return carried seven document requests; the recorded ones were two marketing plan or campaign case studies with KPI analysis, the official email address of the person who signed the contract for due diligence, a blue-background photo, and a detailed job description. The second return asked for an exit stamp, bank statements with income highlighted and merged into one PDF, and an explanation of the remaining contract term.
Why does MDEC want the contract signatory's email address?
For due diligence — to verify the employment relationship exists. It must be an official company-domain address, not a personal one. This item does not appear on most published document checklists.
Do I have to be outside Malaysia when I apply?
Yes. A New Application requires the applicant to be outside Malaysia before approval. One applicant was asked on the second return to supply an exit stamp as proof.
